Today, I want to express heartfelt gratitude and thanks to my wonderful cousin Louise Richard and her husband Maurice for their very thoughtful gift of an antique J.A. Marven Ltd. (“Marven’s Biscuits”) cookie tin. This gift was given to me in memory of my late father Bernie Cormier (my father and Louise’s mother Thérèse are siblings) on Thanksgiving Day (October 8, 2012) when I was invited to their home for a wonderful turkey supper. Louise and Maurice purchased the tin at the former Harbourfront Antique Market in Toronto about 20-25 years ago.

The tin appears to be one that was used for special occasions — perhaps Christmas. The “window” in the middle looks like it may have displayed a decorated box that was inside the tin. The top of the tin opens. It’s in pretty rough shape. I’ve never seen another one like it. I remember Louise saying that she was quite surprised to see it in Toronto, of all places! They purchased it right away and brought it back home with them to its native city. (Description: The tin is in the shape of a cube. Dimensions are approximately 9.75″ wide, 9.75″ high and 8.75″ deep.)

My father worked at Marven’s for 29 years from 1949 until 1978, when the cookie factory closed for good. Since then, the historic Moncton landmark has been repurposed into an office complex — a very nice one, too! Many Monctonians have fond memories of Marven’s. There was nothing more magical than for a kid to walk through Marven’s while it was in full production — the incredible aromas… the conveyor belts of cookies moving from floor-to-floor… just incredible! It was like something out of a movie!

Thank you, Louise and Maurice. I will treasure this gift forever.

  1. I saw this post on Vintage Moncton’s Facebook page. What a wonderful keepsake to have from Marven’s Biscuits. I remember them when I was growing up in Moncton.
