An inspirational American Idol audition that’s sure to touch the heart

American Idol is back for its 12th season. This week, fans were treated to a slew of auditions over two nights featuring returning judge Randy Jackson and new judges Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality of the judging this year. I was expecting Nicki Minaj to be a trainwreck, but she’s offering the most constructive comments of the whole gang. Mariah Carey still seems a bit subdued, but hopefully she’ll find her voice. Minaj seems to be stealing the limelight among the ladies, so far. Meanwhile, Keith Urban is coming across as a positive addition to the show. Nice guy with constructive comments!

On Thursday evening, viewers were treated to one of the most inspirational auditions of recent years when Lazaro Arbos stood in front of the judges. When he began to speak, it became clear that he had a severe stuttering problem — but one that miraculously went away when he sang. Remember country singer Mel Tillis? He had the same issue.

It was a very emotional audition — and one that you should watch even if you’re not a fan of the show. This guy can really sing!

Here’s the audition everyone’s talking about:

Here’s his interview after he was chosen to go to Hollywood:

Idol Chatter review of American Idol’s May 25, 2011, episode — The finale!

Brian Cormier - Idol ChatterAs we all know by now, 17-year-old Scotty McCreery of North Carolina was crowned American Idol 2011 at a star-studded two-hour event last night that included performances by Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Tony Bennett, Judas Priest, Tom Jones, Tim McGraw, TLC, Lil John, Bono, The Edge, Gladys Knight and more! Thanks to everyone for the messages, comments, etc., since the column began again in March. This is the fourth consecutive year that the column has run in the Moncton Times & Transcript and the second year for the Fredericton Daily Gleaner. Thanks to the editors for once again inviting me to write the column and to the staff who waited so patiently for it every evening after the show finished. It was a lot of fun!

Idol Chatter review of American Idol’s May 24, 2011, episode — Top 2 performance show

Brian Cormier - Idol ChatterThis is it, folks! Last night was the final performance show of the 2011 season and we’re down to 16-year-old Lauren Alaina and 17-year-old Scotty McCreery! Both sang their hearts out last night in front of a packed auditorium and millions of fans at home. Each sang three songs — one of their own choosing, one chosen by their own idol and one that will be their first single should they win tonight!

Each did a fine job and Lauren, especially, made an impact with her last song. Why Scotty chose to sing first and allow her to sing last, I’ll never now! Bad strategic move on his part. Lauren was also suffering from a blown-out vocal cord, but she managed to do very well.

To find out who I think will win, what the judges had to say and what Scotty and Lauren sang, click one of the links below.

Idol Chatter review of American Idol’s May 19, 2011, episode — Top 3 results show

Brian Cormier - Idol ChatterAfter months of auditions and performances, we’re down to our final two on American Idol! This week, the Top 3 performed three songs each and 95 million votes determined who would be going to next week’s finale on Tuesday (performances) and Wednesday (results). I predicted that Scotty McCreery — a shoo-in from day one — and Haley Reinhart — who I thought peaked at the right time — would be going to the finale, leaving the show’s youngest contestant, Lauren Alaina, on the sidelines.

Idol Chatter review of American Idol’s May 18, 2011, episode — Top 3 performance show

Brian Cormier - Idol ChatterThis week, the Top 3 performed three songs each: one of their own choosing (mentored by Beyoncé), one chosen by season-long mentor Jimmy Iovine, and one chosen by the judges. Last night was a pretty good one for all three finalists — Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart. One of them even fell on stage during one of their performances but picked themselves up to continue like a real trooper!
