Sunday Gratitude: A very special Christmas gift

Charles Dickens Christmas Village house

On Friday afternoon, I received a beautiful gift from “the beyond”. Thanks for the very touching note and gift of a Charles Dickens Christmas village house from Jason Capson and Monique Capson in memory of Jason’s mother Shirley, a longtime faithful reader of Hump Day who passed away on the same day as my father (August 26, 2012). The house was part of Shirley’s collection.

I love it and will treasure it forever!

I love anything Dickens-related at Christmas since A Christmas Carol (1951 version) is one of my favourite movies of all time. (I’m quasi-obsessed with it.) There was also a Christmas treat included that was… well… criminally delicious. I think it was gone before they left the driveway.

Thank you for the wonderful surprise.

Sunday Gratitude: The aroma of a Christmas wreath

Christmas wreath

I own pets, so the smell of a real Christmas tree would be too enticing for them to resist. They barely leave the artificial tree alone. I can’t imagine having a real tree!

To compensate for that wonderful aroma of a real fir tree that’s so connected to the holiday season, I buy a real wreath and hang it at my back door. Whenever I enter the house, I get a big whiff of that incredible Christmassy smell!

It may not seem like much, but today I’m grateful for the aroma of a real Christmas wreath. Is there anything better at this time of the year?

Sunday Gratitude: Facebook helps me keep in touch with family and friends

I can’t remember what “before Facebook” was like. I joined the social network in April 2007 after hearing so many people talk about “what they saw on Facebook,” etc.

Five years later, I’m on the site every day. I use it to keep in touch with long-lost family and friends I would never keep in touch with were it not for the convenience of Facebook. I also use it in my business as a tool for networking and communicating. Of course, I also use it to share updates and photos with people I know and see regularly “in the present.”

No one can ever make everyone happy, but I really appreciate how Facebook keeps me informed with what others choose to share.

Facebook isn’t perfect, but I could never go back to not using it. It’s been a very valuable communication tool in my personal and professional life.

Bashing Facebook seems to be “de rigueur” these days, but today I’m giving it a big shout-out! Thanks!

Sunday Gratitude: Plumbers who work on the weekend!

When you’re washing your dishes late on a Sunday morning and you find yourself standing in a pool of water in the middle of your kitchen, it can’t be good.

What I thought was just a bit of water on the floor from an unnoticed spill of water while doing the chore actually ended up being a major plumbing disaster. My sink’s drainage pipe had disconnected completely from the sink itself! Yikes!

I called a plumber immediately and they were fixing the problem within an hour. I’ll have to pay through the nose for an emergency Sunday plumbing call, but it’s not like I had much of a choice! When you need a plumber, you NEED a plumber!

Thankfully, I was able to get on with the rest of my day afterwards. The new drainage system is working like a charm.

Needless to say, I’m very grateful for plumbers who work on the weekend!

Sunday Gratitude: A Coton de Tulear named Milane

I’ve had my Coton de Tulear Milane since May 7, 2011. I can’t imagine not having her now. She’s a great companion and has the sweetest disposition ever. She loves everyone and gets along really well with other dogs and even cats. She loves kids. She loves to play. She’s affectionate. She’s a great dog — and I’m grateful for her.

And besides, look at that face! How can you not love that! This photo was taken earlier today in the park across the street from my house. I thought all those fallen leaves would make a nice background.
